Veronica Neave is a drama queen, and I mean that in the nicest sense of the word. Well known to Brisbane theatregoers (this year she has delivered acclaimed performances in God of Carnage for Queensland Theatre Company and The White Earth for La Boite), she is an actor and physical theatre performer whose working life is full of tragedy and crisis, excitement and heightened emotion. Comperes speak to sisters Veronica Neave, Christine Keepance and Elisha Neave. They have had genetic testing to reveal they all carry the BRCA2 gene mutation which leads to a 90% likelihood of breast cancer. Their great-grandmother and their grandmother both died from breast cancer and their mother was diagnosed with the condition, all around 49 or 50. Keepance says the conditioned loomed as something in the background of their childhood. Neave says the positive result of the genetic test was 'heavy news'. Elisha and Christine inherited all their mother's ailments but Veronica seemed to have escaped the gene. Says she did not want to miss out on having it - she would have felt bad. Keepance said she did not have a choice. Her son was adamant she have a mastectomy. Her friend in Perth got breast-cancer and she realised she was lucky she could make a choice. Vernice would not have opted for surgery had she not had a 4yo son at the time. Their risk of cancer after mastectomy falls to 6%. They discuss the psychological impact of mastectomy on themselves and those around them. The doctors have suggested a link to ovarian cancer and they suggested removing the ovaries and womb. Veronica refused. They promote her book, Pieces of Me. Their brothers can carry the gene and pass them onto possible daughters. There is a light link to prostate cancer.
