Can you reach the end of a rainbow?
Is rainbow magic real?

A summer shower brings the delight of a rainbow. Is there truly magic at the end that Dad believes there is?

Join Sam and Ruby as they frolic in their backyard, creating rainbows and chaos with imaginative and experimental water play.

The children quickly discover the joy of chasing rainbows. But will they ever discover the secret of what lies at the end of the rainbow?

Perhaps Dad can show them how?

While Katrina McKelvey and Cheri Hughes have beautifully captured the magic and delight of rainbows, it’s the surprise ending that will have you in awe of mother nature and wondering how you never learned a particular rainbow fact. You’ll never look at rainbows the same way. Chasing Rainbows will make you smile and fill you with a sense of wonder.”

  1. Rainbows are a mystery and a joy. ‘Chasing Rainbows’ catches both. It’s lovely that after the rain storm, when all seems lost, there appears the magic rainbow. – Susanne Gervay

Writer and Regional Advisor, Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators Australia East & NZ
SCBWI, Writer Ambassador Room to Read, Books in Homes, Patron of Patron Monkey Baa Theatre, Lifetime Social Justice Literature Award by International Literacy Association, Nominee Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award

  2. Magic and whimsy meet science and wonder as two children experiment with finding, making and catching rainbows. A natural springboard for colourful classroom STEM investigations.

  3. “The charming story of Sam and Ruby and their adventure to discover gold and unicorns at the end of the rainbow will have children entranced.

Not only will it help introduce children to the wonders of science but also delivers a beautiful message that while something may not be what you hope or expect, it can still be full of wonder and magic. A delightful new book from a very talented author.”

  4. While Katrina McKelvey and Cheri Hughes have beautifully captured the magic and delight of rainbows, it’s the surprise ending that will have you in awe of mother nature and wondering how you never learned a particular rainbow fact. You’ll never look at rainbows the same way. Chasing Rainbows will make you smile and fill you with a sense of wonder.

  5. An engaging read for K-3 classes and a great lead into science weather units and experiments.

  6. I can see applications in the classroom in a variety of subject areas: English- The use of onomatopoeia in this story could lead to a rich discussion on this aspect of language and lead children to investigate words to use in their own story writing.

Science and Technology: The Stage 1 syllabus examines Changes in the Sky including daily and seasonal changes. Sam and Ruby see a rainbow and experiment to recreate rainbows in different ways and places and observing, testing and making predictions is all part of the technology aspect of the syllabus that is introduced in the early years.
