Michelle Mitchell

Michelle Mitchell is an author, award-winning speaker and educator who has presented to over 200 000 people in her career to date.

Michelle started her career as a primary school teacher. Her passion for life skills education very quickly led her to specialise in the health and wellbeing sector.  In 2000 Michelle left teaching and founded a charity, Youth Excel that delivered small group support programs for girls ‘at risk’.

For the next 18 years Youth Excel continued to grow and expand until it serviced over 50 schools 120 families each week with psychological, counselling and mentoring services.  Her work extended to the Department of Child Safety as well as numerous alternative learning centres. Michelle’s multidisciplinary team delivered individual and small group therapy and holiday programs to young people aged 6 – 18.

Michelle became well known for successful outcomes with teenagers who did not flourish under more traditional forms for therapy.  As a result, she had the privilege of working alongside of psychiatrists, social workers and psychologists to help young people and their families overcome significant challenges.

Michelle’ work has been featured on The Today Show, Today Tonight and Channel 10 Morning News, as well as countless print media including The Age, The Courier Mail and Dolly magazine. She is a regular contributor to Get Ahead Kids, Prime Time Radio and 96.5fm. It is endorsed by leading parenting experts such as Maggie Dent, Dr Justin Coulson, Sharon Witt and Collett Smart.

Michelle is also a speaker who presents to parents, students and professionals in schools and educational conferences including Generation Next, No to Bullying and The Resilient Kids Conference. As a speaker, Michelle is down to earth, energetic and passionate.  She was recently awarded Inspirational Speaker 2013 by the state government.

As an author, Michelle has incorporated years of grassroots experience into her book, “What Teenage Girls Don’t Tell their Parents”, “Parenting Teenage Girls in the Age of a New Normal”, “SELF-HARM: Why Teens Do It and What Parents Can Do to Help” and “Everyday Resilience: Helping Kids Handle Friendship Drama, Academic Pressure and the Self-Doubt of Growing Up.” Michelle has also authored a series of five life skills programs utilised by schools nationwide.

Michelle’s honest and hope-filled approach has seen her help countless teenagers transition successfully into adulthood. She is a registered teacher and lives with her husband and two teenagers, in Brisbane, Australia.
